Report on strength training from ukactive highlights huge generational divide
A report from ukactive named Shaping a New Era of Strength Training, found a huge generational difference in strength training activity. The report showed that younger adults are increasingly engaging in structured resistance training whilst older adults remain the least likely to meet the Chief Medical Officer’s muscle strengthening guidelines. The Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines recommend muscle strengthening activity at least twice a week.
The report found that half of adults aged 65+ reported taking no strength training at all, yet these are the people who stand to benefit the most from this activity. Interestingly 75% of Gen Z reported that they trained weekly. There are numerous benefits for older adults that participate in structured strength training programs including:
Reducing sarcopenia
Helping to prevent frailty
Reducing the risk of osteoporosis
Maintaining balance and coordination
Improving flexibility and posture
Reducing the risk of falls
Every day functional movement
Mental and cognitive wellbeing
Boosting resilience
