Time to Unplug
The colours of nature, particularly green and blue help to calm us by slowing the heart rate and encouraging deep breathing which can affect regions of the brain like the amygdala. The amygdala is involved in decision making and emotional responses including fear, anxiety, panic and even aggression. Connecting with nature encourages relaxation in this brain activity helping to reduce overstimulation which can be restorative.
Spending time in nature increases our wellbeing with many health benefits like helping to lower blood pressure and reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. Nature, the colours, the sounds, the smells all encourage a calming effect on those of us experiencing sensory overload helping to reduce overstimulation.
