Taking part in the annual Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend supports citizen science and improves our own wellbeing

This weekend is the RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch, the UK’s biggest citizen science wildlife survey. Everyone is invited to spend 1 hour counting the birds they can see in the garden or greenspace visible from a window or balcony.

How to take part:

  • Check out the RSPB’s website where they have a free guide.

  • Spend 1 hour watching the birds and record the birds that land.

  • Only record the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time.

  • Submit your results to the RSPB.

Don’t worry if you don’t know the names of all the birds you see, the RSPB’s guide is easy to follow and will you to help identify them.

Remember, taking part in outdoor activities, looking at or spending time in nature can lead to less anxiety, better sleep habits, reduced cortisol levels, improved mood, mental and physical health. Nature-Led Wellness is increasingly recognised as an important part of health and wellbeing, with huge benefits to be gained in simple and natural outdoor activities.
