Early bedtimes associated with increased physical activity

Monash University led research found that going to bed earlier than usual helps to optimise physical activity levels the following day. The research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences analysed whether sleep habits including duration and timing were associated with increased activity the following day.

The researchers analysed data from almost 20,000 participants who wore a biometric device for a year and found that those who went to bed earlier were more physically active. Individuals with a regular bedtime of 9pm did around 30 more minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day compared to those who regularly stayed up until late.
