Weakness or stiffness in one joint can impact the whole body
Ankles, knees and hips all function as a connected system, weakness or stiffness in one joint can affect all of the body. Limited ankle mobility, for example, can increase stress on the knees, while weak glutes can lead to poor knee alignment.
Each of our joints are cushioned by articular cartilage, specialised tissue that covers the ends of bones. This cartilage protects joints and along with synovial fluid, creates a smooth, lubricated surface for motion. Regular and consistent, evidence-based exercises help to build strength, balance and coordination that can benefit the different muscles that work together during each movement.
As muscles around our joints act as shock absorbers, strengthening muscles with resistance training can help to reduce the pressure placed on our joints. Discomfort as we age may lead some of us to want to avoid exercise but with the right advice, exercise can actually help protect our joints.
