Develop a connection to nature to help reduce high cortisol levels
Healthy levels of cortisol are essential for controlling the sleep-wake cycle, aiding memory, maintaining healthy blood pressure, metabolism, blood sugar levels, reducing inflammation and a healthy immune system. Cortisol is released in response to stress, helping the body respond to threats through the fight or flight response. However, high levels of cortisol can be detrimental to our health and wellbeing, often caused by prolonged chronic stress. Consistent high cortisol levels can cause fatigue, headaches, poor sleep, weight problems and increased anxiety.
Nature has a calming effect that helps lower cortisol levels. Exercising outside helps us to connect to nature and develop a deeper appreciation for the environment. A sense of connection to the outdoors can increase feelings of gratitude which contribute positively to mental health. Being in nature promotes mindfulness enabling us to immerse ourselves in the present moment increasing awareness of our surroundings and thoughts.
