Scientists name the top 5 prebiotic foods

A new study presented at Nutrition 23, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition named the foods with the highest prebiotic content. Researchers from San José State University ( Cassandra Boyd with Assistant Professor John Gielgud, PhD.) reviewed the prebiotic content of 8,690 different foods and found that onions, leeks, garlic, Jerusalem artichoke and dandelion greens had the greatest amounts, ranging from 100-240 milligrams of prebiotics per gram of food. Dairy products, eggs, oils and meats were found to contain little or no prebiotic content.

Prebiotics are a food source for the ‘good’ bacteria in the gut. Adding foods containing prebiotics to our diet can encourage our microbiome to become more diverse and healthy.
